The Reach of your Shadow

It's Groundhog day! Overshadowed (*pun intended*) by the Superbowl aftermath - and at the elementary school level today - tons of talk by excited students about Katy Perry's half time show :) What I find significant about Groundhog day and the emphasis on seeing or not seeing a shadow - is the shadow itself. Whether we know it or not - our footprint is not just the size of our shoes, especially if we think in terms of our digital footprint. We cast a shadow (metaphorically speaking) - or leave a footprint wherever we are. I've been mulling on this idea of shadows and reflection for a few weeks and today is the perfect day to share my mulling: 1. Backing Up

We talk a lot in education about moving forward - bouncing forward - being resilient and learning from our mistakes/errors. At the same time we also talk about Understanding by Design (which allows us to start with the end in mind and work backwards in our planning and preparation to get to that end). I'll be honest, in my experience - it's a lot easier to keep looking forward. We've heard that message longer and perhaps that's the difficult part (the reteaching and re-framing until it's more habitual and less effort?). Is it going to take longer to embrace and embed (become natural) over time.....? Have you ever noticed.... that no matter how many times you see the same sign (billboard/poster/framed picture of sayings) - you keep reading it? I even find myself half way through saying - "dang it! you clever marketing company you!" As always I feel this post could go in 20 different directions.  I spent the last hour and a half emptying garbage bags from the dumpster behind my youngest son's school (with the help of his brothers) - and yes I have already showered (sorry TMI- but that smell ~ kinda sticks with you like peanut butter on the roof of a dogs mouth). Who was missing from the dumpster diving fun? - the reason for the dumpster diving. My youngest - who doesn't like talking to adults - came home hours after lunch, only to tell us then, that he had accidentally thrown his retainer away with his lunch tray. Had he told the teacher (and not his friends) - he could have gone down to the lunch room and rummaged through ONE bag of trash.                          .........and had a great day!
