Backing Up

We talk a lot in education about moving forward - bouncing forward - being resilient and learning from our mistakes/errors. At the same time we also talk about Understanding by Design (which allows us to start with the end in mind and work backwards in our planning and preparation to get to that end). I'll be honest, in my experience - it's a lot easier to keep looking forward. We've heard that message longer and perhaps that's the difficult part (the reteaching and re-framing until it's more habitual and less effort?). Is it going to take longer to embrace and embed (become natural) over time.....? The Reach of your Shadow

It's Groundhog day! Overshadowed (*pun intended*) by the Superbowl aftermath - and at the elementary school level today - tons of talk by excited students about Katy Perry's half time show :) What I find significant about Groundhog day and the emphasis on seeing or not seeing a shadow - is the shadow itself. Whether we know it or not - our footprint is not just the size of our shoes, especially if we think in terms of our digital footprint. We cast a shadow (metaphorically speaking) - or leave a footprint wherever we are. I've been mulling on this idea of shadows and reflection for a few weeks and today is the perfect day to share my mulling: 1. "NOPE"

So my husband got a really fun game for Christmas this past year. "Exploding Kittens". It's not as hostile or vulgar as it sounds - in fact it's quite fun, and leads to some interesting family alliances. Anyway - one of the cards you an play is the "nope" card. It negates any other card anyone plays. So this is not a game tutorial - the story continues....... We were sitting all together watching a movie/tv last Saturday night - and my eldest son James - said something under his breath and the boys laughed. Brian and I both asked what the joke was - to which he replied - no nothing... but I had heard the word 'mom' so we pressed on. The joke was on me - that he was referring to the fact that I say NO a lot - like a hand full of nope cards. SO:  1) I didn't take it personally because it's true - I do - at home.
