"How do you measure a year in the life?"

How about love..........?

One of my ALL TIME favorite musicals - RENT!

As this year draws to an end I have to reflect back on HOW I chose to measure this year: it's successes - it's failures, it's moments that have brought me to tears or to uncontrollable laughter. I know for sure that the number of cups of coffee have kept a certain (cough cough K cup company in business).

For the first time as an ELL specialist I have had the privilege to work with High School students - which have been my highlight of my day (most days). They have inquired about language, life and have invited me into their homes. The family dynamic has never been so important to me as an educator, after meeting these students - and their families. Isn't that ironic - as we usually see 'hands off' attitudes on either side of the partnership at the high school level, when (in my humble opinion ) guidance and direction are probably the most critical.

I've questioned my career path a lot this year - whether the minutes I've spent in the classroom have had any impact on my  students at all, and to be completely honest if I might have a less stressful more 'fun filled' career elsewhere. I'm not sure I'm ready to tackle that one yet but I do know that minutes add up (duh!) and I don't ever want to look back at the end of the year and feel like I wasted them.

I know many minutes in 2014 have been spent on Voxer; and I can say that as intoxicating as first phone calls with a new boyfriend/girlfriend are - getting to know other like minded people around the globe - have been some of the best minutes spent in 2014.

Connections - relationship - friendships- support networks - adventures- surprises- learning opportunities - challenging dialogues and so much more!

So, my plan for 2015 comes back to my desire to be authentic, transparent, intentional and impactful (not a real word I know) with my minutes - all 525, 600 of them.

I commit then to my #oneword:
LOVE!

If my thoughts, reflections, actions and intentions can be centered around this core value of a compassionate heart, I think 2015 will be the #BESTYEAREVER!

  5. Thank you, Geniene, your post brought to mind this quote from The Little Prince: One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.
